4 Reasons Your High Schooler Should Do A Semester At Sea

Most high school learning happens within the confines of a traditional brick-and-mortar school that is planted firmly on land, but there are other options out there, and a school on the sea is one of them. There are programs that offer students the chance to study as they sail the world and stop at multiple countries along the way. Here are four reasons that your high schooler should embark on a ship for a semester of their secondary education.

1. To Stand Out in College Applications

The college application process can be daunting, and applications to the best schools are always highly competitive. Good grades alone are not enough to ensure that your child gets into the school of their choice; sometimes the thing that sets one application apart from another is a unique perspective or experience. A semester spent at sea and exploring the world will make your student a much more competitive candidate for college.

2. To Experience the World

Many high school students have little real-world experience, and they might not have interacted with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. A semester spent at sea will let them experience a taste of the world. They will learn about different countries and cultures from lived experience, and they will hopefully become better world citizens with more empathy and broader horizons by the time they dock back at home.

3. To Reinvigorate Their Love of Learning

Traditional high school can make learning dry and repetitive, and it is easy for students to get burned out doing the same old things every day with no change of scenery; a semester at sea is an explosion of new experiences and can make learning fun again, even for the most jaded student. Your high school student can learn about the world while interacting with it. Instead of just seeing pictures of world destinations and listening to a droning lecture, they can see, touch, smell, hear, and even taste the country for themselves.

4. To Teach Them Independence

Many high school students haven't had the opportunity to live away from home yet, and they may be unprepared for the sudden independence of college life. A semester at sea can ease a student into greater independence before they set off on their own. Your high schooler can learn how to live away from home and handle small day-to-day problems on their own. Doing something like a study abroad or semester at sea can give your student a huge confidence boost and set them up for success at college.
